Who We Are
Oxton Hockey Club provides players of all ages the opportunity to play, and develop hockey at all levels.
Oxton Hockey Club was founded in 1888 and is one of the oldest clubs in Cheshire, and indeed, within the north of England.
During this time the club has gone through many metamorphoses, adapting to the changing landscape that is a progressive and competitive sports club.
However, our vision remains the same – to provide opportunity for players of all ages and levels to grow, develop and enjoy sporting excellence.
We pride ourselves on offering a welcoming and inclusive environment, for players to enjoy our sport.
Each weekend in the regular season we will typically field four Ladies’ teams, five men’s teams in the league; three mixed junior teams playing friendly fixtures against other north-west junior sides; along with other single-sex age-group sides competing in regional league and cup competitions.
Oxton Hockey Club is a “not for profit” CASC sports club, and our members are at the heart of what we do. Prices are set to cover running costs and any extra is ploughed back into the club for the benefit of our members. There is a discount of 25% for a full paying adult in their first season at the club. You can view our membership and match fees here: https://www.oxtonhc.co.uk/faq/
The Meeting times below are for ladies’ training – there’s no separate fee for training sessions, this is included in your membership fee – see above.
Potted Club History
After great success in the 1950’s and 60’s, the club slipped somewhat in the late 70’s and 80’s. Investment in a youth policy and the club’s joint venture with the nearby Birkenhead School to build its own astroturf pitch revitalised the club during the 1990’s.
In 1997, the clubhouse at Oxton Cricket & Sports Club was opened after a massive fundraising effort and with the aid of National Lottery support. This coincided with the start of ladies’ hockey at Oxton. In 2009 with the declining state of Birkenhead pitch, the club made the move to relocate its provision to Calday School Pitch. Enjoying an enhanced relationship with both Calday Grange Grammar School and Calday Sports Club has allowed us to secure a new home venue. The relationship with the school strengthened further with the culmination of a joint venture and large financial investment to re-lay the pitch at the start of the 2024-25 season and secure the future of Oxton Hockey Club for many more years.
From its formation in 1997 Oxton Ladies 1st XI enjoyed great success from the outset winning 7 successive promotions reaching the North league. The section endured a slight dip in the early 2010’s only to bounce back in the 2018-19 season, when all 4 ladies teams enjoyed promotion. Since the restructuring of the areas in 2021 the Ladies 1s continue to enjoy success in Div 2 south, whilst L2s play in Div 4 and L3s and 4s (development) play in Div 6.
As we enter the 2025-26 season, we see the Mens 1st XI entering their 3rd consecutive season in National League Conference North, hoping to improve on their 5th place finish but taking nothing for granted in this highly competitive league.
We remain committed to developing alliances with local schools and continuing to offer junior hockey at all levels – we are currently investing in the Talent Centre Scheme through England Hockey to further strengthen our coaching provision for juniors and the wider playing community.
